Chapter 12

Miranda was still pondering what it all meant hours later.

She’d gone home after leaving the diner and had tried to start outlining her next book to take her mind off the real-life mystery, but it kept intruding so much that she gave up on the outline and took Butter for a walk along the beach instead. Kyle had opted to stay back at the house. He’d told her that one walk along the beach a day was quite enough for him and then he’d flopped down onto the couch dramatically with a hand over his eyes. Silly ghost.

It was almost dinner time and the heat from the day hadn’t dissipated very much but at least there was now a cool breeze coming off the sea. Jack had texted earlier to say he would come by, but it would be late. In his brief text he’d mentioned that the murder of Joe Dixon wasn’t the only drama to happen today and he would tell her all about it when he got to Ragged Rest.

Miranda didn’t think she could take anymore drama, hence the walk with Butter. She needed to ground herself and what better way than to sink her toes into the sand.

She could just make out Billy’s cruise boat out along the horizon. She wished that she could be out there as well, feeling carefree. Even with the threat of seasickness it was still a nice thought.

Miranda walked slowly and savored every step. By the time she returned to Ragged Rest she was feeling much better. As she approached the back of the house, she could hear the television blaring out through the open glass doors. She grinned. Kyle was having a ball. Apparently, he’d needed some time out too.
